Musical Club of Hartford Annual Competition for High School Students Living or Studying Music in Connecticut

Performance Requirements

Piano:
• Open to students Grades 9 - 12.
• Three pieces from three different periods of music, maximum 15 minutes total.
• All pieces must be performed from memory.
• It is recommended that you consider the list of prior pieces performed (available from the Piano contact below or by clicking Piano Repertory on Competition Page) when selecting the level of repertoire.


Strings:
• Open to Grades 9 - 12
• Two contrasting recital pieces or compositions from two different periods of music and two different composers, at least one with piano accompaniment (NO CONCERTO MOVEMENTS), maximum ten minutes total.
• Performing pieces from memory is recommended.


Voice:
• Contestants must be in Grades 11 or 12.
• Two contrasting selections with piano accompaniment from two different periods of music, one piece in English and one in a foreign language. (No Musical Theater.) Maximum ten minutes total.
• All pieces must be performed from memory.


Brass/Woodwinds:
• Open to Grades 9 – 12
• Two contrasting recital pieces or compositions from two different periods of music and two different composers, at least one with piano accompaniment (NO CONCERTO MOVEMENTS), maximum ten minutes total.
• Performing pieces from memory is not required.


Additional Information:

• Maximum number of contestants in each division is 15 (18 for voice); minimum is 6. If number of contestants is too great, preference will be given to students in grades 11-12 (grade 12 for vocal).
• Application fee of $25 is non-refundable.
• You must provide your own accompanist. If you do not have one, Musical Club has a list of people who are willing to accompany contestants. You will need to arrange to pay them directly. Call or email your division chair listed below for information on available accompanists. (Call EARLY!!!)
• You must provide a score of your music for the judges. Include any changes you have made in articulations.
• Judges will stop you in mid-performance if you exceed your performance time.
• If you are not present at your assigned time, it will be assumed that you have forfeited your participation in the competition.
• Former First Prize winners are not eligible.
• In order to receive their monetary prizes, First, Second, and Third Prize winners MUST perform one (Vocalist’s perform BOTH) of their audition pieces at a public concert, sponsored by the Musical Club of Hartford, in January at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2080 Boulevard, West Hartford. All participants are urged to attend. Winners concert performance time may not exceed 8 minutes.
• Winners will be notified by telephone. Judges' decisions are final.
