Jazz Soloist Competition Performance Requirements

The Musical Club of Hartford Annual Jazz Soloist Competition


Performance Requirements:

Open to grades 9-12

1)  All students must provide recorded accompaniment for their solos (i.e. Jamey Aebersold, IReal B). Students must play one chorus of the melody, and improvise for two choruses. Students playing a "blues" should improvise for four choruses.

2)  Students must perform two pieces of contrasting styles (i.e. up-tempo swing, ballad, Latin).

3)  All selections must be jazz standards from the American Songbook. Rock tunes will not be accepted.

Soloists shall be judged on their mastery, understanding, and conceptualization of the jazz idiom, as well as improvisational skills.

The competition has 2 Divisions:

Division 1: Horns: woodwinds, brass, strings
Division 2: Rhythm instruments: piano, bass, guitar, vibes

Maximum number of applicants accepted in each division is 15.

Deadline for application is Dec 10.

Application fee of $35. Is non-refundable.


If you are not present for your assigned audition time, it will be assumed that you have forfeited your participation in the competition.

In order to receive their monetary prizes, First, Second, and Third place winners must perform their pieces at the Winners Cabaret Concert, sponsored by the Musical Club of Hartford, in January. Soloists will have an opportunity to rehearse and perform with a professional jazz trio for the concert!
