Winners of the 2007 Musical Club of Hartford Scholarship Competition

The first, second and third place winners presented a free concert on Sunday, February 4, 2007, 2:00 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2080 Boulevard, West Hartford.

Piano Competition Winners

1st place Michelle Lee, an 11th grade student at Miss Porter's School and a piano student of Sima Brodsky's.

2nd place Mark S. Tondi, a 12th grade student at Joel Barlow High School in Redding, has studied piano with the renowned pianist and pedagogue Natalie Ryshna Maynard.

3rd place Sarah Pan, a 10th grade home-schooled student from Burlington, is a student of Margreet Francis'.

Honorable Mention Kathryn Greenwood, a home-schooled 12th grade student from Bloomfield, is a student of Margreet Francis'

Honorable Mention Jierui (Gerry) Song, 10th grade student at Conard High School in West Hartford, is a student of Dina Simanovich.

Honorable Mention Kendra Nealon, a 10th grader from Glastonbury, is a student at Miss Porter's. She studies piano with Margreet Francis at Hartt School Community Division.

Vocal Competition Winners

1st place Richard Saunders, tenor is a junior at Simsbury High School, and is currently studying voice with Jack Pott and Ken Shelley at Hartt School of Music as a recipient of the Ensign Darling Vocal Fellowship.

2nd place Allegra DeVita, mezzo-soprano, a senior at Sacred Heart Academy in Hamden, studies voice with Valerie Sorel and vocal coaching and music theory with Eric Trudel.

3rd place Devon Ellis, soprano, is a senior at Greenwich High School, Greenwich, CT. She studies voice with Erin Windle, and also with her choir director, Patrick Taylor.

Honorable Mention Carly Henderson, soprano, is a junior at Avon High School, and a second-year voice major at the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts. She has studied voice with Anna Maria Silvestri at Hartt School Community Division for five years.

Honorable Mention Michelle Kayser, soprano, a senior at Hall High School, has been a student of Amy Champagne's for the past three years, and plans on attending college next year for musical theater.

Honorable Mention Laura Pincus, alto, a senior at Greenwich High School, studies voice with Erin Windle and Patrick Taylor.

Strings Competition Winners

1st place Fiona Wood, violin, is a 10th-grade honors student at North Haven Haven High School. Fiona has been playing violin since she was four, and currently studies withYale violin professor Kyung Yu.

2nd place Johannes Zahn, cello, an 11th-grader at Kent School in Kent, CT. Johannes received his first cello instruction at the age of four at the Music Conservatory in Munich, Germany. Since age 11 he has received instruction from Edgar Gredlar, a member of the Munich Radio Orchestra.

3rd place Sarah Cicchetti, violin, an 11th grader at Miss Porter's School in Farmington, CT, studies violin with Teri Einfeldt at Hartt School.

Honorable Mention Sura Cho, violin. Grade 10 Farmington, CT. Sura began playing the violin in Korea when she was in kindergarten. She studied violin in Korea, winning competitions and performing solo concerts there. Sura came to America when she was in seventh grade. Sura has studied with Michelle Kim, assistant concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic, and Bo Hyup Wang from the Boston Symphony. She currently attends Miss Porter's School and studies with Micky Rieceman at the Hartt School.

Honorable Mention Kisho Watanabe, violin, from Greenwich, CT, is a senior at Horace Mann School in New York. He began studying the violin at age three in Japan and currently studies with Dr. Ann Setzer at the Juilliard Pre-college.

Honorable Mention Samuel DeCaprio, cello, Lebanon, CT, is a home schooled junior and is currently studying cello with Dr. Kangho Lee, assistant professor of Cello at UConn.

Honorable Mention Kathryn Greenwood, viola, Bloomfield, CT, is a home-schooled senior who studies viola with Melinda Daetsch.

Winds Competition Winners

1st place Hannah Horowitz, flute. Hannah is a senior at Wethersfield High School, and a student of Greig Shearer's at Hartt School Community Division.

2nd place Jenny Sansom, French horn. Jenny is a senior at Old Saybrook High School and a student of Susan Spaulding's at Hartt School Community Division.

3rd place Devin N. Cohen, bassoon. Devin is a sophomore at Bolton High School, and studies bassoon with Laura Koepke in the pre-college program at the Manhattan School of Music.

Honorable Mention Ariel Fein, flute, a senior at the Hopkins School, she lives in Easton, CT.

Honorable Mention Jane Sylvester, a freshman at Berlin HS, she lives in Kensington, CT.
