Winners of the 2008 Musical Club of Hartford Scholarship Competition

The Winners Concert took place on Sunday, January 27, 2008, 2:00 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Piano Competition Winners

1st Place Piano Miss Jierui (Gerry) Song West Hartford, CT

Gerry Song is a junior at Conard High School in West Hartford. A student of Paul Rutman, she is in her second year of the Hartt Performer's Certificate Program. Gerry has won multiple awards both for her musical endeavors, her artwork, and her academic achievements. She has been a winner in the Audrey Thayer Piano Competition, the American Music Teachers Association State Competition, and Kiwanis Musical Festival in Canada. Recently she played for Edward Cumming's Master Class.

2nd Place Piano Miss Sarah Pan Burlington, C

Sarah Pan is a homeschooled 11th grader and a piano student of Margreet Francis at the Hartt School Community Division. She was chosen to play in the Piano Honors Recital at the Hartt School Community Division for the past four years, and has received first and second prizes in the Audrey Thayer Piano Competition. Last year Sarah received third prize in the Musical Club of Hartford's High School Piano Competition. She has performed as a soloist with the Farmington Valley Symphony Orchestra and has played in pre-concerts at the Bushnell. Sarah is a pianist and choir accompanist at the Chinese Baptist Church of Greater Hartford.

3rd Place Piano Miss Meredith Bayliss Manchester, CT 

Meredith Bayliss is a homeschooled 11th grader and studies piano with Margreet Francis at the Hartt School. She has been an active participant in local, state, and Canadian musical events and won multiple awards. These include: Hartt School Honors (2007), Audrey Thayer Piano Competition (Honorable Mention 2004, 3rd Place 2005, 2nd Place 2007), the Hartt Performer's Certificate Program (2007-2009), Queens College Summer Suzuki Piano Institute (Ontario, Canada, 2005), and many others.

Vocal Competition Winners

1st Place Voice Anastasia Rege, soprano, Groton CT

Anastasia Rege, soprano, is a senior at Robert E. Fitch High School in Groton and is a student of Jurate Waller at the Thames Valley Music School. She has participated as a chorus member in CT Lyric opera’s performance of Susannah by Carlisle Floyd, has performed in the Mystic Chamber festival, and has sung in the CMEA Eastern Regional and All-State choirs. Anastasia has also performed in her school’s chamber choir, drum line, and jazz band. She plans to pursue an education and career in opera.

2nd Place Voice Sean Nolan, baritone, Tolland CT

Sean Nolan, baritone, is a senior at Tolland High School and has studied voice with Lizabeth Miller for four years. Some of Sean’s favorite roles have been Adrian in Smokey Joe’s Café, and The Beast in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. Sean has been a member of the Tolland High School Madrigal singers for three years and has been selected as Student Director for next year. He has also performed as part of CMEA Eastern Regional and All State choruses for the past 3 years.

3rd Place Voice Emily Ide, soprano, Durham CT

Emily Ide, mezzo soprano, is a junior at Coginchaug Regional High School in Durham and studies with Dr. Susan Mardinly. Emily earned 1st place in the 2007 auditions held by the National Association of Teachers of Singing, received the highest score in the 2007 Hartt Vocal Honors Recital and the Bel Canto Scholarship, and is an Ensign Darling Vocal Fellow at the Bushnell. She has played leading roles in musicals such as Belle in Beauty and the Beast, Rosemary in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, and Baker’s Wife in Into the Woods, and has participated in the 2007 Southern Regional High School Music Festival, Connecticut All State High School Music Festival, and All New England Music Festival.

Honorable Mention Voice Louisa Owen Sonstroem, soprano, a senior at Edwin O. Smith High School in Storrs, lives in Mansfield Depot.

Strings Competition Winners

1st Place Jenny Liu, violin, Orange, CT

Jenny Liu is a 9th grade honors student at Amity High School. She has studied violin for eight years. Jenny has been a student of Fiona Murray at the Neighborhood Music School (NMS) for the past four years. In 2007, Jenny was chosen as one of three young "prodigies" to play with the Norwalk Symphony Orchestra. She was also a winner in the Senior Division Performance Prize Competition at NMS in 2007. In 2005 Jenny won the Greater New Haven Youth Orchestra (GNHCO) Concerto Competition and was featured as a soloist with the orchestra in 2006. She has served as concertmaster of the GNHCO in 2006-06 and of the Southern Connecticut Regional Middle School Festival in 2007. Jenny was invited to perform in the "Orange Artists in Performance" concert in 2007. She will perform the Bruch Violin Concerto in G Minor with the Amity Orchestra this coming winter.

2nd Place Strings Kendra Nealon, violin, Glastonbury, CT

Kendra Nealon is a junior at Miss Porter's School in Farmington, where she is a member of the Advanced Performance Ensemble. She studies violin with Teri Einfeldt and piano with Margreet Francis at the Hartt School Community Division. Kendra is a second year student in the Performer's Certificate program for both instruments. For the past two years she has been a member of the Connecticut Youth Symphony, where she currently is concertmistress. Last year she was third place winner of the Connecticut Youth Symphony Competition and a winner of the Evelyn Bonar Storrs piano scholarship prize. For the past several years she has played in various string quartets at the Community Division, piano and string honors recitals there, and Northern Regional and All-state music festivals.

3rd Place Strings Samuel DeCaprio, cello, Lebanon, CT

Samuel DeCaprio's musical experience began when he started studying the piano at the age of 6. He began playing the cello at the age of 13 and is currently studying with Dr. Kangho Lee from the University of Connecticut. In 2004, after playing for only a year, he was awarded third place in Connecticut's Eastern Regional Audition. He has participated in NEFMA Festival the past two years, receiving first place in 2005. In 2006 he received second place and the grand prize in the Windham Young Artists Competition. He was awarded Honorable Mention in last years Musical Club of Hartford High School Competition. IN April 2007, Samuel soloed for the first time, playing Haydn's Cello Concerto in C Major with the Willimantic Symphony. Currently a home schooled senior, Sam enjoys subjects such as politics, American Government, and economics. He plans to pursue a degree in cello performance.

Winds Competition Winners

1st Place Winds Eun Sun Choi, flute, Kent School

Eun Sun is a junior at the Kent School in Kent, Ct., studying with Deborah Cardenas. She is an active member of the school's Concert Band, Orchestra and Flute Ensemble, as well as playing flute for the school musicals, and accompanying the school chorus. Ms. Choi has been selected as a participant in both the CMEA Northern Region and All - State Festivals. She has been featured as a piccolo soloist with the Kent School Orchestra, and also has been featured as a finalist in the Danbury Symphony Orchestra Contest. Ms.Choi won a Gold Medal in the Gwanju Art School Competition in her native Korea, in 8th grade.
She performed a solo recital last year at the school, and also performs at local churches.

2nd Place Winds Lidiya Selikhov, flute, Storrs, Ct.

Lidiya is a sophomore honors student at E.O. Smith High School in Storrs, Ct., studying with Greig Shearer. She is an active member of her school's Concert Band and Chorus. She is a member of the Greater Hartford Youth Wind Ensemble, and the Performer's Certificate Program at Hartt. For the past two years, Lidiya has been chosen for The Hartt School’s Honors recital. Also, for the past 2 years, she has won 1st place, and the Ed Gerry Wind prize, at the Windham Regional Art's Council High School Competition. She has also attended the master classes of James Galway, Rhonda Larson, and Robert Dick. This past summer Lidiya attended New England Music camp where she was principal flutist in the concert orchestra.

3rd Place Winds Jane Sylvester, alto saxophone, Kensington, Ct.

Jane is a sophmore at Berlin High School, studying classical saxophone with Beverly Brown, and jazz saxophone with John Mastroianni. She is a member of the Greater Hartford Youth Wind Ensemble, and the Performer's Certificate Program, as well as the saxophone Quartet at Hartt. Jane was selected as first chair in both the CMEA Northern Region and All - State Festivals, as well as the All- New England Band for the past 2 years. She also was a soloist for Master Classes with Edward Cumming, of the HSO, and Eric Dudley, of the Cincinnati Symphony.

Honorable Mention Tim Monos, tuba, a junior at Hall High School, West Hartford. Studies with Stephen Perry and Joanna Hersey.
