Winners of the 2012 Musical Club of Hartford Scholarship Competition

The first, second and third place winners performed in a free concert on Sunday, January 22, 2012, at 2 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2080 Boulevard, West Hartford.

Piano Competition Winners

First Place, Piano

Ana Pan, Burlington. Ana Pan, a homeschooled sophomore, studies piano with Margreet Francis at the Hartt School of Music Community Division.  She has won prizes in the Audrey Thayer Piano Competition and was chosen for the Hartt Community Division's Piano Honors Recital from 2008-2011.  In 2009, she received first prize and best performance for a Commissioned Work at the Renee B. Fisher Competition/Elementary and Middle School Division, and was also selected for a recital appearance at the Hartford Chapter CSMTA Select Students Competition.  She won second prize in the 1st International Chopin Competition in Hartford, Category B, in 2010, and third prize in the CSMTA Concerto Competition in 2011.  She is a regular pianist at Covenant of Grace Church and Chinese Baptist Church.

2nd Place, Piano
Meredith Keen, West Hartford. Meredith began her piano studies in 2006 with Pih-Shung Shi at the Hartt School of Music Community Division. Since 2007 she has studied with Margreet Francis. In 2008, Meredith competed and was accepted to perform in the Select Student Piano Competition. In 2009 and 2010 she placed second and received honorable mention, respectively, in the Audrey Thayer Piano Competition. Meredith was a finalist in the Bob Jones University Fine Arts Fall Festival Piano Competition in 2009 and 2011. In 2009 and 2010 she was accepted and performed in the Piano Honors Recital of the Hartt School of Music. In 2011, Meredith was Honorable Mention in the Musical Club of Hartford Piano Competition. She provides music regularly as a musician in her church. Meredith is homeschooled in West Hartford. Concert Piece: Claude Debussy (1862-1918).  Préludes, Book 2: V. Bruyères (Moors)

3rd Place, Piano
Conan Xiao, South Windsor. Conan Xiao is currently a junior in South Windsor High School.  He has been a piano student of Margreet Francis at the Hartt School Community Division for seven years and was selected into the Hartt Piano Honors Recital for the past four years, receiving the Evelyn Bonar Storrs Scholarship in 2011.  He is a first year student in the Performer's Certificate Program.  Conan has won prizes in the Audrey Thayer Piano Competition and received Honorable Mention in the 1st Hartford Chopin International Piano Competition in 2010. He is a pianist for church services at the Chinese Baptist Church of Greater Hartford. His concert piece will be Frédéric Chopin, Scherzo in B minor, Op. 20.

Strings Competition Winners

1st Place: Anastasia Dolak, violin, New Fairfield. Anastasia is a senior at New Fairfield High School and studies with Lucie Robert at the Manhattan school of Music Pre-College division.  She was the winner of the 2010 Constance Mensch Concerto Competition and of the 2011 Danbury Symphony Orchestra's Concerto Competition, and will perform with the Danbury Symphony in Ives Concert Hall on January 29, 2012.  Ana has been invited to perform in master classes in chamber music with Peter Wiley and Ani Kafavian.  She has participated in the Music Alp Festival in Courchevel, and in the International Music Academy in the Czech Republic.  She has performed in Carnegie Hall,  Jazz at Lincoln Center, Symphony Space, and Avery Fisher Hall.  Ana also donates her time performing at hospitals, churches, and senior centers. Her concert Piece will be Edouard Lalo, 1823-1892: Symphonie Espanole, Opus 21, Allegro non troppo, accompanied by Jiaxin Tian.

2nd Place: Gunnar Moll, violin, Farmington, CT. Gunnar is a senior at Farmington High School and studies at the Hartt School with Teri Einfeldt.  He has won the Connecticut Youth Symphony concerto competition and will be performing Bruch's Scottish Fantasy with the orchestra in the fall of 2012.  He also received the Abraham Huang Memorial Scholarship for best performance, and his trio, in which he is violist,  won the grand prize in the Rayburn Chamber Music Competition. Gunnar is also an avid composer and debuted one of his works for violin and orchestra, Havanaise-Tarantelle, with the Vintage 21 Chamber Orchestra.  In addition, Gunnar is a state-finalist on the Farmington High School varsity track team. For the concert he will play Antonio Dvorak, Concerto in a minor, Opus 53, Allegro ma non troppo, accompanied by Frank Viola.

3rd Place: Jay Kim, violin, Bloomfield, CT. Jay is a senior at the Loomis Chaffee School and studies with Mickey Reisman. He has been concertmaster of the American Festival of the Arts Orchestra and the Houston Region #23 orchestra, and winner of the Houston Youth Symphony competition. In 2011, He was awarded a full scholarship to the Interlochen Summer Music Camp. He has also been a member of the Tanglewood Music Institute.  For the concert he will perform: Henri Vieuxtemps Concerto #5 in a minor, Opus 37, Adagio, Allegro con Fuoco, accompanied by Gay Chun.

Katie Zhou, Grade 10, Staples High School., Westport, who studies with Asya Meshberg.

Voice Competition Winners

1st Place: Erin Aldrich, soprano of Windsor Locks. Erin, a high school senior at Hartford Christian Academy in West Hartford, sings in her high school choir, and with a small ladies ensemble that won first place at the regional level of the American Association of Christian Schools Fine Arts Competition for three years. In the same competition Erin won third place at the regional level and second place at the state level in vocal solo. She studies voice with  Sylvia Aldrich. At the concert she will sing Vedrai, Carino  from Don Giovanni  by W.A. Mozart

2nd Place: Everett Davis, baritone, of Avon. Everett, a senior at Avon High School (AHS), plans to major in vocal music at Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee.  Everett is a member of the AHS Chamber Choir and Men’s Choir, and will sing with the Regional Honor Choir this year. He has performed principle roles in South Pacific, Bye, Bye Birdie, and Damn Yankees at AHS, and also enjoys playing the cello. His teacher is Craig Hart. At the concert he will sing The Jolly Roger  by R. Ritchie Robertson.

3rd Place: Meredith Keen, mezzo-soprano, West Hartford, CT. Note that Meredith also won 2nd prize in the Piano Division! Meredith, who studies voice with her mother, Dr. Brenda Keen, began singing in 6th grade with the Connecticut Children’s Choir and has performed with them throughout Germany and Austria. In 2006 she joined the newly formed New England Girls’ Choir and has sung with them for the past six years. She has performed in the historic Williamsburg Candlelight Concert Series. She has also sung in Notre Dame and La Madeleine in Paris, France, as well as a dedicatory concert at the U.S. Memorial on Normandy Beach, France. In 2010 she performed a solo in St Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin, Ireland. In 2011 Meredith received second place at Bob Jones University High-School Fall Festival in Greenville, South Carolina. A senior, Meredith, plans to attend Bob Jones University next year as a cello performance major. For the concert she will perform Mozart's Non so più cosa son.

Honorable Mention: Courtney Llinares, soprano, North Haven, CT

Winds Competition Winners

1st Place winner: Jessica Hyde, flute.  Jessica is a junior at E.O.Smith HS in Storrs, where she plays principal flute with her school band, as well as the EO Smith Community Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra.  She studies flute with Greig Shearer. She was chosen as principal flute for the CT Music Educators's Eastern Region Band for the past 3 years, and has participated one year in the CT All State Festival. She was a 2nd Place winner in the Musical Club of Hartford's 2011 competition, as well as a 2nd Place winner in the Edward Gerry Wind prize in the Windham Regional Arts Council competition.  She has performed with the UCONN Treblemakers, Hartt Honors Recitals, and the Quinnebaug Valley Music Festival. She performs regularly at nursing and retirement homes. For the concert she will perform: Carmen Fantaisie by Francois Borne, accompanied by Gay Chun.

2nd Place winner: Alexander Roehl, clarinet. Alex is a senior at New Fairfield HS, where he plays principal clarinet with his wind ensemble and marching band. He studies clarinet with Theresa Dolak. Alex was the 3rd Place winner in the Musical Club of Hartford's 2011 competition, as well as a two-time finalist in the Danbury Symphony Concerto competition.  He was chosen as principal clarinetist for the CT Music Educator's Western Region Orchestra , and the Western CT Youth Orchestra for two years, and has played in one CT All State Orchestra. He has participated in NYC Opera pre-professional workshops in Lincoln Center, and was given a scholarship to study at Ithaca College Summer Music Academy. At the concert he will perform Concerto #1 in f minor, opus 73, mvt 1, Allegro moderato, by Carl Maria von Weber, accompanied by Margarita Nuller.

3rd place winner: Mary Pearce, oboe, Avon, CT. Mary is a senior at Avon HS, where she plays with her school wind ensemble and pit orchestra. She studies oboe with Anita Wilson. Mary is co-principal of the CT Youth Symphony, and has participated in the CT Music Educators Northern Region Orchestra for four years, as well as two years in the CT All-State Festival. Mary also participated in the All New England Band last year, and is principal oboe in the orchestra this year. She has participated in the Hartt Honors Woodwind Quartet, and also is a performing musician at St Ann's Church. For the concert she will perform Allegro from Quartet in F Major, K.370, by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, accompanied by Rebecca Fishman.

Honorable Mention: Tyler Van Kirk, flute.  Canton, Grade 12,  Canton High School. Teacher: Bridget Gilchrist
