Winners and Honorable Mentions for the 2019 Musical Club of Hartford High School Strings Competition

1st place winner: Jisoo Kim, violin

Jisoo Kim, violinist, lives in Avon. She is a senior at Walnut Hill School for the Arts in Natick, MA and a student of Lynn Chang and Robyn Bollinger at the New England Conservatory Preparatory School. She is a member of Youth Philharmonic Orchestra at NEC Prep and has performed chamber music at NEC Prep and her school. She attended the Tanglewood Institute Summer Camp (2016) as a member of the Young Artists Orchestra. She also attended the Bowdoin International Music Festival (2018). Jisoo had masterclasses with Benjamin Zander, Irina Muresanu, Itamar Zorman and Rebecca Anderson in 2018. She received Honorable Mention in Musical Club’s High School Competition in 2018.
 
2nd place winner: Matthew Hill, violin

Matthew Hill, a junior at Conard High School, is Concertmaster of the select high school group I Giovani Solisti led by Emmett Drake, and a member of Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra led by Benjamin Zander. He recently had the pleasure of traveling to Europe with both ensembles where he played in some of the most famous halls in the world. Matthew has worked with many notable violinists including Ida and Ani Kavafian, Kyu Young Kim, and recently Grigory Kalinovsky at The Jacobs School of Music in Indiana. Matthew currently studies privately with Angelo Yu in Boston. This is Matthew’s third year as a prizewinner in Musical Club’s competition.
 
3rd place winner: Lillian Yim, cello

Lillian Yim, a junior at Farmington High School, has been studying cello with Katie Kennedy for eight years. Lillian has served as principal cellist of the Connecticut Youth Symphony and the Tanglewood Young Artists Orchestra. She has received top scores at CMEA Northern Regional Orchestra Festival and CT All-State and was chosen for the All-National Symphony Orchestra. In 2018, she placed first in the Hartford Music Teachers Alliance concerto competition, as well as winning prizes in the Musical Club’s Competition and the CT-ASTA Solo Competition. An avid chamber musician, Lillian has been a part of the Hartt Community Division program and received several Honors Scholarships.
 
Honorable Mentions: Elliott Davis, violin, a senior at Avon High School; Wujin Kim, cello, a junior at Ridgefield High School.
