Hazel Wang

The First Place winner in the Musical Club of Hartford’s High School Winds Competition was Hazel Wang, a sophomore at the Ethel Walker School, in Simsbury, Ct.
In China, Hazel studied with Daming Zhang, Bile Zhang, Jeffrey Khaner. In CT she studied with Gonzalo Cortes, and currently studies with Minta White.

Kayla Bryan, Guilford Connecticut - Violin

Kayla Bryan is a junior at Guilford High School, and a violin student of Donna Agai at the Hartt School Community Division. She is a member of the Connecticut Youth Symphony where she won the 2016 Concerto Competition. She was also the recipient of awards in the Hamden Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition and the David Einfeldt Chamber Music Seminar Concerto Competition.

1st Place winner:
Julius Shieh
Concert performance piece: Joseph Haydn, 1732-1809. Sonata in E minor, Hob.XVI:34: I. Presto

First Place in the Piano Competition was awarded to Julius Shieh, a ninth grade student at Avon High School and a student of Stanford Online High School.  Since 2016 he has studied piano with Margreet Francis at The Hartt School Community Division (HCD), and since being at HCD, was selected to perform in the HCD’s Piano Department’s Honors Recital.  He was also awarded the Watson Morrison Scholarship Award.

Forty-First Annual Scholarship Competitions for Connecticut High School students

The Musical Club of Hartford, Inc., which celebrated its 125 year history in 2015-16, is an organization whose primary goal is to nurture the Musical Arts and promote excellence in music, both among seasoned music lovers as well as the younger generations. The Musical Club makes music more readily available to people of all ages and social backgrounds in our community.

First Prize $500 - Second Prize $300 - Third Prize $200, awarded in each category.

The piano competition took place on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2080 Boulevard, West Hartford.
