The Musical Club of Hartford launched its 131st season of live programming on Thursday, September 23, 2021, at 10 a.m. on Zoom, with Mark Bailey, Director, Yale Collection of Historical Sound Recordings. Back by popular demand, Mr. Bailey presented a program on "Listening for Composers' Imprint and Performance Practice Insights in Historical Recordings of Classical Music".

He played recordings from the Collection featuring performers specifically selected, taught and/or coached by renowned composers in the performance of their own music. Through these recordings, Mr. Bailey suggested how we can glean insights into composer intent as well as contemporary performance practices of their time.

"To hear Frederic Lamond, a student of Liszt, perform the famous Liebestraum is revelatory. Or Victor Maurel singing Falstaff, for whom Verdi wrote the role. Or Leopold Auer playing Tchaikovsky, for whom Tchaikovsky wrote his Violin Concerto. And so on!" (Mark Bailey)
