<p>Judy Handler (guitar) and Mark Levesque (mandolin) enjoy creating and performing arrangements of music from throughout the world. They draw on diverse musical influences including classical, Brazilian, Latin American, Spanish, gypsy, jazz, Celtic and folk music. In this workshop they will discuss some of their approaches to arranging and demonstrate techniques they have used with several of their arrangements. <a href="http://www.judyandmark.com" target="_blank">Judy and Mark</a> hope that by sharing their musical ideas, the audience will have more specific things to listen for and appreciate in the music. At the end of their presentation there will be time for questions.</p>

Musical Club of Hartford Annual Meeting

<p>Three members of Hartford-based <a href="https://www.cuatropuntos.org/" target="_blank">Cuatro Puntos</a>--Annie Trepanier, Steve Larson and Kevin Bishop--will explore the ways in which the Covid-19 pandemic has changed how professional musicians like themselves can continue to perform, teach, and record music. <p>This will be Part Two of the three-part lecture series presented to the Musical Club in recognition of Hartt's 100th anniversary: <strong>Hartt School Past, Present and Future</strong>. (Part One, "The Past", was presented in February, 2020 before the pandemic shutdown began.)</p><p>The Hartt School's 100th Anniversary (A.K.A. <a href="https://www.hartford.edu/academics/schools-colleges/hartt/about/hartt-100-celebration/default.aspx" target="_blank"><strong>Hartt 100</strong></a>) continues in spite of the COVID challenges, and the second of three scheduled Hartt-MCH events will focus on the "present": Hartt's current college faculty and students. In particular, we will be featuring the School's vibrant chamber music program. Hartt Dean Larry Alan Smith will be interviewing violist Rita Porfiris, Chair of Hartt Chamber Music, and there will be live (i.e., virtual) and recorded student performances. The Hartt School of Music at 100: The Present

<p>Mark Bailey, director of the Yale Collection of Historical Sound Recordings, will present a variety of vocal and instrumental examples that convey the extent to which performance practice has changed since the era of early recordings. They serve as inspirational teachers of the performance practice of the time, providing numerous poignant examples of how music was composed and performed during such a rich era of creativity.</p><p>Together we will listen to and discuss a variety of historical recordings by singers and instrumentalists spanning several musical styles. In doing so we will seek to uncover some of the most treasured musical moments they shared with us for posterity. The Impact and Enduring Importance of Historical Recordings

<p>In our first program of 2021, <em>Oboe Duo Agosto</em>&nbsp;entertained us with:&nbsp;"Storytelling Oboes", a concert based on music inspired by poems, art, folk tales and songs;&nbsp;and dealing with life, love, and allegory. The presentation consisted of an&nbsp;hour-long pre-recorded musical performance, with each piece introduced by live commentary. A question and answer session followed.</p><p><a href="https://oboeduoagosto.com/" target="_blank"><em>Oboe Duo Agosto</em></a>&nbsp;comprises Ling-Fei Kang, oboe, and Charles Huang, English horn. <p>Violinist (and Hartt graduate) Gary Capozziello presented a program surveying the solo violin repertory from Bach to Bartók. Gary talked about the challenges composers have confronted in writing for unaccompanied violin, as well as their motivation for doing so. He is an active recitalist and guest artist, and a passionate chamber performer, founding the Atlas Trio in 2016. Capozziello is also the artistic director of the International American Classical Music Festival, touring China's eastern seaboard performing concerts and teaching students in master classes and lessons. He is also co-founder of the Hartford Classical Music Academy, a collaborative chamber music program for international students. The Solo Violin from Bach to Bartók

<p>Our October 22, 2020 virtual roundtable with 5 Storrs Scholarship recipients from 2019 was a big hit. On this program, we met six of the&nbsp;2020 Storrs Scholarship recipients, all of whom were enrolled in Connecticut university programs at the time they applied. In normal times, we would have heard some of these pianists in a live recital this month.
